Izwi Lamagugu Anthology: A Triumph for Mpumalanga’s Poetic Voices

The IZWI LAMAGUGU anthology of Mpumalanga Poetry has emerged as one of the most exciting initiatives in Mpumalanga’s poetry scene, giving local poets a platform to showcase their talent. The project, which started in Nkomazi and extended to Mkondo Municipality, involved a series of poetry workshops designed to nurture and develop the skills of emerging poets. Over the course of these workshops, participants were guided by experienced facilitators, who provided mentorship and constructive feedback to help refine their craft.

From these workshops, 25 talented poets were selected to be included in the anthology. For many of these contributors, this was their first opportunity to have their work published and shared with a broader audience. Receiving a physical copy of the anthology was an emotional moment for several poets, as it represented recognition of their dedication, creativity, and passion for the art of poetry. For some, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, highlighting the importance of platforms like IZWI LAMAGUGU in empowering local voices.

The project was managed by Mpumalanga Arts Hub, under the leadership of Enos Sambo as Project Manager, with Thobile Maluleke serving as Project Coordinator, Colile Mkhatshwa as Project Administrator, and Nontokozo Phiri as Project Facilitator. Together, the team worked tirelessly to ensure that the workshops ran smoothly, that all logistical challenges were addressed, and that the anthology was published to a professional standard. The project also received valuable support from the National Heritage Council, whose funding helped bring the vision to life. The anthology was published by Mbokodo Publishers, a respected name in South African literature.

Beyond the logistics and publication, the aim of IZWI LAMAGUGU was to celebrate and embrace the diversity of Mpumalanga’s languages, including SiSwati, isiZulu, isiNdebele, and Xitsonga. By doing so, the project not only highlighted the richness of local linguistic heritage but also encouraged young poets to write and express themselves in their native languages, ensuring these languages remain vibrant and relevant.

Contributors have expressed their excitement and gratitude, noting that this platform has given their work legitimacy and exposure they had never experienced before. For Mpumalanga’s literary community, IZWI LAMAGUGU is more than just an anthology; it is a celebration of culture, talent, and community, inspiring a new generation of poets to pursue their passion with confidence and pride.
