Indigenous Voices Shine at Izwi Lamagugu Poetry Workshop in Nkomazi
Nkomazi, Mpumalanga – The voices of Mpumalanga’s poets echoed with power and pride during the Izwi Lamagugu Poetry Workshop, held at the heart of Nkomazi Municipality on 24 and 25 April 2025. This groundbreaking session was more than just a poetry workshop; it was a celebration of identity, language, and the rich cultural heritage that defines the province.

Spearheaded under the banner of the Mpumalanga Poetry Festival, the Izwi Lamagugu (Voice of Heritage) initiative aims to revive and empower indigenous languages—particularly SiSwati, isiZulu, isiNdebele, and Xitsonga—through the art of poetry. The first workshop brought together young poets, cultural activists, and educators to share, learn, and grow in an environment rooted in African expression and creativity. Participants explored the power of words as tools for social change, self-expression, and community engagement.
The workshop was expertly facilitated by Ntokozo Phiri, a renowned poet and mentor known for using literature as a tool for personal and social transformation. Under her guidance, participants delved into the meaning of heritage, storytelling techniques, poetic structure, and performance skills. The hands-on sessions allowed young writers to reflect deeply on their identities, community challenges, and aspirations, giving them the confidence to express their voices authentically and powerfully.
Central to the success of the workshop was the incredible support of Nkomazi Municipality. Without their timely intervention, this initiative would not have been possible. The municipality provided facilities, resources, and logistical support while also promoting the workshop among local youth. Their involvement ensured a safe, welcoming environment where young people could thrive creatively.

“We are deeply grateful to Nkomazi Municipality for believing in this vision and helping us bring it to life,” said Enos Sam Sambo, Chairperson of Mpumalanga Arts Hub and one of the project leaders. “Their support ensured that young voices were heard, honored, and uplifted in their own languages, reinforcing the importance of cultural pride in our communities.”
The next chapter of the Izwi Lamagugu journey will unfold in Mkhondo Municipality next month, where a second poetry workshop is set to continue this critical cultural mission. These workshops will culminate in the publication of an anthology titled Izwi Lamagugu: Voice of Heritage, a collection of original works by poets from across the province, capturing their stories, struggles, and dreams.
This initiative is not just about poetry; it is about preserving history, empowering youth, and ensuring that the diverse voices of Mpumalanga remain vibrant and celebrated for generations to come. By creating spaces where young poets can explore their cultural roots, share their narratives, and gain recognition, Izwi Lamagugu strengthens both individual identity and collective pride across the province.
