Papa Ndu: The Melodies of Faith and Inspiration
Papa Ndu, also known as Ndumiso Manana, is a South African gospel artist who has been making waves in the music industry for many years. He has won numerous awards, including the Mpumalanga Gospel Awards, and his music has touched the hearts of many people across the country. So, what inspired Papa Ndu to become a gospel artist? According to him, he grew up in a Christian family, where his father was a preacher and a great follower of gospel music. It was only natural for him to follow in his father’s footsteps and create gospel music that would touch the hearts of many people.
One of Papa Ndu’s most significant accomplishments was winning the Mpumalanga Gospel Awards. For him, it was a great honor to be recognized at home. Although he had previously won a Crown award, which is a national platform, the feeling of being recognized at home was refreshing and fulfilling. Papa Ndu connects with his audience during his live performances by not only singing but also sharing his journey with them. He takes them through how he wrote some of his songs and gives them an intimate insight into his creative process. His creative process when writing and recording music is unique. Song ideas come to him in different ways and at different moments. Most of the time, he gets songs in his sleep, and they come like dreams. When he wakes up, the song or part of the song would still be ringing in his mind. He then quickly goes to his piano and plays it, then records it on his phone.
Despite his busy music career, Papa Ndu tries to balance it with his family life. It is not easy, but he made it a principle not to take studio work after 18h00, so he is home in the evenings. He acknowledges that the industry they work in involves working at awkward times, rehearsals that stretch till late, and gigs at places far from home, but he still tries to be home as much as possible.
One of Papa Ndu’s most special albums is The Songwriter’s offering Volume 2. It is special to him because he got to work with people he always dreamt of working with, like Margaret Motsage. The opportunity he got to be intimate with his audience as he poured out his heart and shared his convictions with them was also an unforgettable experience. Regarding the future of gospel music, Papa Ndu believes that it is very dynamic in that the message doesn’t change, but the methods keep improving and changing with time. He believes that the big live recordings will soon fade away, and we’ll go back to studio and more music videos. People are into YouTube and streaming music on various platforms, so lengthy shows captured on DVDs are no longer necessary.
Papa Ndu has some upcoming projects, including finishing his new single, which will hit the digital stores in July. He will also be releasing a book he penned titled The Church Musician. Later on, in the year, he will be recording the Songwriter’s offering Volume 3. As an artist, Papa Ndu has a responsibility to teach, raise awareness, and challenge the status quo with his music. He is also a role model to other young people from his community and has a duty and responsibility to be a good role model in the way he carries himself. He must also be at the forefront of campaigns that bring hope to his society.
